I must
first begin by saying I am not an expert on Margaret Atwood . I have read, A Handmaids
Tale, Surfacing, Bodily Harm and
both editions of her Selected Poems (which span 21 years). I have read and heard
her interviews. I have studied critiques and opinions on Margaret Atwood, the person and the author. I have written numerous
Atwood essays, and so I think it is reasonable to say that I am knowledgeable on Atwood. Nevertheless,
I would not consider myself an Atwoodian!
I am of
the opinion that Margaret Atwood is a progressive and eloquent person. A thought provoking author and humanist, her pinprick
wit reveals a writer who doesn't take herself so seriously, and who can find humor in life even if it's at her own expense.
The crux
of my interpretation of Tricks with Mirrors is the examination of the poem through
a series of Hyperlinks, which connects to various parts of text within the poem. The text I divided throughout the site, and
I manipulated the structure of the text for effect and to reflect my personal interpretation.
Through
photographs, video and text, my interpretation of Atwood's Tricks with Mirrors
is one of subjugation, coupled with quiet desperation ... and beyond. This is my – an undergraduate student
– humble interpretation of a literary masterpiece and in no way am I attempting
to improve or alter the meaning or intent Margaret Atwood had in mind when writing the poem.
